The Russell Byers Charter School, an urban elementary charter school in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, PA, is a dream place to work. We emphasize early literacy, an experiential approach to learning that uses the nationally recognized reform model Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound (ELOB) and small class size of 20 to 1. We serve 400 students in 4-year old Kindergarten (4K) through 6th Grade. In late August 2006, we welcomed a new class of 4-year-olds to our kindergarten program - one of the few kindergarten programs of this kind in Pennsylvania.

The school's approach to teaching, school culture and teacher training is centered around ELOB - an innovative model based on the guiding principles of the famed outdoor education program Outward Bound. ELOB emphasizes high achievement through hands-on learning, character growth, and teamwork.

• Our teachers receive extensive professional development and support that begins in August with an orientation program for new teachers. One full day per month is set aside during the school year for professional development activities. Participation in off-site teacher conferences is encouraged.

Classroom Teacher in the primary grades must have:

• Extensive experience teaching in elementary grades and curriculum design at this level.
• PA Instructional I certification.
• Strong interest in collaboration and a constructivist approach to education.
• Experience teaching Readers' and Writers' Workshop
• Creativity, compassion and intelligence.
• Preference will be given to applicants who have taught in an Expeditionary Learning School and/or have a background in environmental or outdoor education.

• Experience working with young children.
• Must have at least an Associate's degree or have completed two years of college.
• Strong interest in working closely with talented, committed teachers.
• Outside interests that could be shared with children.
• Creativity, compassion and intelligence.

• The base salary of a teacher hired to teach full-time at the Russell Byers Charter School will be increased if the teacher has one or more of the following:
  • Master's degree in education.
  • One or more years (up to a total of 7 years) of full-time elementary classroom teaching experience.
• In addition, full-time teachers receive:
